Few modern Mercedes-Benz automobiles have achieved true icon status as quickly—or as convincingly—as the SLS AMG.

Developed from the outset by Mercedes-AMG, the SLS combined dramatic proportions, lightweight aluminum construction, a rear-mounted dual-clutch transaxle, and one of the greatest naturally aspirated engines ever to leave Affalterbach. The Roadster added open-air motoring to the formula without diluting the character that made the SLS so special.

The Heart of the SLS

Beneath that impossibly long hood is AMG's hand-built M159 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8, producing 563 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.

Derived from AMG's celebrated M156 architecture but extensively reengineered for the SLS, the M159 was paired with a rear-mounted seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT dual-clutch transaxle. The arrangement gave the SLS both exceptional balance and the immediate, naturally aspirated response that has largely disappeared from modern performance cars.

There are no turbochargers, no artificial theatrics and very little separating the driver from that magnificent V8.

Just eight cylinders, 6.2 liters, and an accelerator pedal.
